At Wooded Glen Recovery Center, we are committed to helping people regain and maintain their sobriety. For some people, the best path toward that goal is inpatient treatment. For other people, outpatient treatment might be the best option. And in some cases, a combination of inpatient and outpatient treatment provides the best way forward for a person struggling with a substance use disorder.

While inpatient treatment offers a range of benefits—including the opportunity to go through detoxification and rehabilitation in an environment that is safe and free from temptations—it is not always a feasible option. This might be due to a person’s ongoing responsibilities as a parent, partner, employee, or student. Financial considerations and the level of your insurance coverage for treatment may also be barriers to pursuing inpatient treatment. Fortunately, outpatient substance use disorder treatment provides flexibility and cost savings while still offering an effective and evidence-based approach to getting and staying sober.

Meanwhile, outpatient treatment can also serve as an excellent follow-up strategy to inpatient care. Outpatient treatment can reinforce everything a person has learned about recovery during their rehabilitation and provide ongoing support and motivation for staying sober

Let’s take a look at the details of Wooded Glen Recovery Center’s approach to outpatient treatment.

The Ins and Outs of Outpatient Treatment

Wooded Glen Recovery Center offers two outpatient programs.

The first outpatient option is day treatment for substance use disorders, which is a partial hospitalization program. That means that treatment is delivered in a hospital-like setting, but the participant returns home after each day’s sessions. A day program like Wooded Glen’s generally provides about 20 hours of treatment each week.

This approach is often useful as a next step after residential treatment. It provides a gentle step-down from inpatient care, ensuring that a person receives ongoing and robust treatment for their substance use disorder as they begin to make the transition back to their daily life.

The second option is our intensive outpatient program (IOP). An IOP provides an excellent combination of structure and flexibility for a person who needs treatment for a substance use disorder but also needs to continue attending to the various responsibilities in their life. Each week, a person participating in our IOP may have three to five sessions, each lasting for around three hours.

In either case, a person participating in Wooded Glen’s outpatient treatment program receives evidence-based, personalized care. That care may include any of a number of therapeutic approaches, including cognitive behavioral therapy and dialectical behavior therapy among others. For those who have been prescribed medication as part of their treatment for a substance use disorder or a co-occurring mental health disorder (or both), medication management may also be a part of the IOP experience.
