“Gilligan’s Island,” a sitcom from the 1960s, has stayed in the public consciousness for decades. The show only ran for three seasons, but it lived on in reruns, animated versions, and a few made-for-television movies. You can still stream the show today. If you do, there is a good chance that the catchy theme song will lodge itself in your brain.
That theme song set up the entire show for anyone tuning in. It relates the tale of five passengers and two crew members who set out on what was supposed to be a three-hour tour. Unfortunately, the S.S. Minnow gets caught in a storm. The song explains, “If not for the courage of the fearless crew, the Minnow would be lost.”
The good news is that the ship runs aground on an “uncharted desert isle.” That is also the bad news. The seven people aboard the Minnow spend the entire series trying to get off of the island. It would be fair to say they do not have much success, but their efforts are endlessly funny thanks in no small part to the quality of comedic acting the cast offers up.
Now, you probably did not come to this blog looking for a description of a classic sitcom from long ago. That is fair enough. But it turns out that this silly sitcom from the 1960s offers some insight into what it takes to maintain your recovery over time.
Let’s set sail for Gilligan’s Island and see what we can learn.
First Things First: Take Care of the Basics
Listen, when you are shipwrecked on a desert island—even in a comedy—you have to take care of some essentials right away. The characters on “Gilligan’s Island” know immediately that they are going to need shelter, a reliable source of food, and access to fresh water. They prioritize these things so that they have a better chance of surviving until they can be rescued.
As your recovery journey gets underway, you will want to focus on some basics right from the jump so that you are better able to leave drugs or alcohol in your past. Those basics include committing to healthy eating, regular exercise, and restful sleep. Going to recovery meetings, building and maintaining a supportive network of friends and family, and steering clear of the people and places you associate with substance use are also basic needs for a person in recovery.
Be Vigilant and Stay Connected
In one of the show’s early episodes, Gilligan is put in charge of watching over the essential supplies the group has gathered (the very basics we mentioned above). While he is doing that, he is also supposed to monitor the weather and see if he can spot any passing ships that could be flagged down.
Because “Gilligan’s Island” is a comedy, hijinks ensure. Gilligan keeps falling asleep, which gives a clever chimp the opportunity to swipe food. In no time at all, Gilligan’s lack of vigilance becomes a problem. A hilarious problem, but a problem nonetheless.
A lack of vigilance can be a problem in recovery, too—and when it is, the potential result is no laughing matter. You want to be alert for triggers, shifts in mood, or other factors that might put your recovery efforts at risk. Failure to stay vigilant regarding such things could set you on a path that can lead to relapse.
Back on the island, Gilligan and his mates make their situation worse by splitting up as they try to find the missing supplies. Unsurprisingly, that just leads to more confusion (and more hilarity).
Something similar, but less funny, can happen in recovery if you separate yourself from your support system during difficult moments. Getting yourself to a meeting, calling a supportive friend, or reaching out to your therapist are all better options than going it alone.
Work Toward Your Goals and Remain Hopeful
Even in the world of a sitcom, getting stuck on a desert island sounds pretty awful. But Gilligan and the six other castaways never stop working toward their goal of being rescued. Regardless of the setbacks they have to overcome, they stay hopeful and keep their important goal in the forefront of their minds.
That is a good attitude for a person in recovery as well. While there will almost certainly be challenges along the way, a spirit of hopefulness can help you continue to move forward. Keeping your focus on your primary goal of leaving drugs or alcohol in your past can see you through difficult moments. And if you feel that spirit of hopefulness slipping, you can rely on your support network to pick you up and keep you going in a positive direction.
